I have a term paper assignment that reads "What is the role of resources in strategic management?" I'm a little confused about what the question is asking...any ideas?
It most probbaly refers to the 4Ms in strategic management.
Men (people)
Materials
Money
Marketing
Strategic management involves effctively managing the 4 Ms or the 4 key resources in any business.

A good book to read relating to strategic management?
I am taking a class called Business Policy that deals with strategic management, competitive advantage, core competencies, etc. We have to pick a book to read that we can relate to anything that was talked about during the course. Can anyone give me the title to a good book that relates to strategic management?
There are 2 related books which would be excellent sources:
"Making Strategy: The Journey of Strategic Management" (1998) by Colin Eden and Fran Ackermann
"The Practice of Making Strategy: A Step-by-Step Guide" (2004) by Fran Ackermann, Ian Brown, and Colin Eden
The topics you mentioned and much more are addressed thoroughly in each book.

what account for the shift from strategic planning to strategic management?
My whole question is:
what account for the shift from strategic planning to strategic management?
in which industries would you be most likely to observe these trends?
Strategic planning is only a piece of success. Without implementation, there is no win. As companies have realized this, they have moved toward strategic management, where the senior people who plan are also charged with implementation. It makes sense and adds to accountability. You'll see this trend in very competitive businesses, especially in the service sector.

How can you relate strategic management with mindset?
Our professor asked me to relate what strategic management with mindset! It will be best if the answer that I’m going to get will discuss details on what are there similarities or there common ground
You have to be cunning, smart, agressive, and passionate to manage both people and profits in today's business world. I would equate those four qualities with good strategic managers.

It matters whether CEO is from inside or outside Houston Chronicle
How many times do we hear comments like “the firm needs a fresh start” and it needs to recruit a new CEO from outside to “shake things up”? It is a common perception that CEOs recruited from outside companies are more likely to make bolder changes than CEOs promoted from within. However, are bolder strategic changes better strategic changes that are beneficial to a company's performance? Not necessarily.
Bolder changes are usually applauded because they are considered the same as adaptability and flexibility in a volatile and fickle market. But bold changes can be disruptive and detrimental to company performance if they deviate from what the company does best. Thus, the performance impact of bold strategic change largely depends upon whether the company's leadership has a good understanding of its core competencies and major weaknesses so as to make the right type and magnitude of strategic changes.
