You're only a Dummy if you don't check out this book!
I don't know how thorough or concise the first 5 editions of this resource were, but I can tell you this edition is both. I have just recently begun educating myself on the market, and started with the most recommended texts about - or by - Buffett, Lynch, Graham and others. I read the Complete...

Investing is tricky and you should be careful and take your time choosing what to buy. I use investopedia's stock simulator. It keeps real time stock prices and you can buy and sell just like you would in real life.

Ask Matt: Is American Airlines a good stock to buy?
Matt Krantz is a financial markets reporter at USA TODAY and author of Investing Online for Dummies and Fundamental Analysis for Dummies. AMR itself cautions investors: "It should be noted that in most Chapter 11 cases, owners of equity securities receive little or no recovery of value from their investment. If you're a gambler willing to take a chance that somehow, after the Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings end, there will be value, you might be willing to risk all your money. Investors who are looking to build solid long-term value from their stock portfolio are best avoiding shares of companies in bankruptcy proceedings that are trading on marketplaces like the Pink Sheets. Most investors, though, should steer clear and are best sticking with shares of healthy companies that trade on exchanges including the Nasdaq or NYSE.
Why are people still distrustful of stocks?
To answer your question, why do investors still distrust stocks despite their recent rise. A: Judging from the long faces of investors, it's hard to believe stocks are actually well on their way to repairing much of the damage from the recession. That means investors are still missing $2 trillion in paper wealth from the previous peak. The broad stock market still is well below where it was before the financial system short-circuited. The Wilshire 5000 index, a broad measure of all U. S. stocks, is up nearly 8% this year. But investors are still tired and distrustful of stocks. Meanwhile, the price of gold continues to rise as investors distrust financial assets. 2 trillion in paper wealth for shareholders. The Dow Jones industrial average has surged to 12,874, which is the market measure's highest close since May 2008.
