I'm looking to start a business, but am not sure what to look for in a good business lawyer. I'm going to need help drafting letters in the hopes of gaining corporate assistance in starting the business.
But I've never needed a lawyer before and want to make sure I get a good one that hopefully won't eat up the small budget that I have.
Any lawyers out there with any advice on the subject? I just want to make sure that my business idea stays mine and don't want some shady lawyer that's going to run off with my plan the minute they hear about it.
Thank you!
Find a lawyer by referral that other small or medium sized businesses you know use -- businesses that actually have been around and have used the person for a couple years.
Avoid a lawyer that offers to take equity in your company in lieu of a fee or a lawyer who does not appear to have any knowledge in small business formation or who promises to "hook you up" with investors he or she knows for a fee.
What you want is a small business lawyer that will offer you a fair fee and is doing well enough that they have no interest in making a fast buck off of ripping you off but is not so busy that they will ignore you.
Be forewarned that you will likely need to put forward a retainer. Hopefully you can talk to whoever is your referall and figure out what they did as a retainer.

Where is the best place to find a business lawyer? What is the general rates for their services?
Call your local bar association and ask for the type of attorney you want. They should give you a list and then you will need to ask for references. Check them out through the references.
I'm on a shoe string budget and need to find a lawyer to write up some contracts. I want to approach a young lawyer fresh out of school because I think those types of newcomers may charge a cheaper rate to get their foot in the door.. Is that a good approach? What I am needing is to have solid sponsorship contracts and venue rental agreements. Is there a better way to get these agreements other than paying a lawyer to go over them? Your information is appreciated.
This is a pay me now or pay (dearly) later if something goes wrong.
Discuss your situation with an Experienced corporate lawyer. The 1st interview is generally no charge...it'll get you going in the right direction.
Better spend a few bucks now than lose everything at a future date.....
I thought I wanted to be a pharmacist, but I don't think I am a very math/science oriented person. I have been considering going into law, and business law sounds interesting. I am so confused about what steps in my education I need to take though!Thank you so much for any answers!
Contrary to some of the posts, you do not need to "specialize" in anything prior to law school, and you don't "specialize" while in law school. You only designate a specialty after law school when you determine what type of law you want to practice. That being said, I would not attempt to obtain a job in a prominent business law firm without at least having a BA in business, as you would want that strong background to support your law degree as well as a strong understanding of business issues, terminology, application, etc., so as to understand how to apply the law to business specific issues.
Ok, to be more specific, i am opening a bar.
A contract lawyer, if your going to sign anything. They specify in contract law. Depending what type of business you will want to specify earnings, salary, and responsibility

Paterson Brings In Big Guns, Consults With Legendary Lawyer Ted Wells

A new day, a new legal development in the complicated tale of Gov. David Paterson and his alleged communications with a woman who accused his aide of domestic violence.
In an article noting the resignation of Paterson communications director Peter Kauffmann, who said he could not "in good conscience" continue in the role, The New York Times also reported that Paterson "sought the help of a prominent criminal defense lawyer, Theodore V. Wells Jr."
Wells is a partner at Paul Weiss and widely considered to be one of the top white-collar criminal defense...
