What do immigration attorneys actually do?
Reconnection

I am planning on applying for law school soon, and I think I want to go into immigration law. The problem is, I have an idea in my head of what an immigration attorney does all day, but that might not necessarily be the reality of the job. Are there any immigration attorneys who can tell me how they spend their day?

Immigration attorneys provide counsel, legal assistance and representation to individuals who are faced with an issue related to processing of their documentation related to immigration. They also represent individuals in court who are facing deportation or when challenging a decision made by an immigration judge.

They are also available for consultation related to immigration law and rules and how the changes to these laws and rules may affect their clients.

Immigration attorneys also develop public policy related to immigration and are responsible for interpreting international law and how these law may affect policy under development.

Hope this helps.

What does attorneys look for when hiring a newly grad paralegal?
Court Directory

I'm 33 years old and I decided to go back to get my paralegal degree. I live in Illinois and I don't have any experience in this field, but I will be willing to orientate to the position. Should I continue to get my bachelors degree or should I just focus on the paralegal certificate? Are degrees from online programs acceptable for the lawfirms in Illinois? What's the best thing for me to do? Please only serious attorneys or professional within a law firm reply! Thanks..

It is very, very difficult to get into a paralegal position with no experience, pretty much impossible. They all want 3+ years experience and a 2 year degree only substitutes for 1 year. I got my associates degree in paralegal studies and for a whole year tried to find a law firm to hire me without any experience...well I couldn't find one. I had to start at a law office as a legal secretary and work my way up the ladder.

A certificate from an online program is not worth anything. If you are serious about this then you should get your associates or bachelors in paralegal studies. You can find a list of institutions in your area that are American Bar Association accredited on the ABA's website. Here's the link... http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/il.html

Non ABA accredited places are no good and potential employers will not be impressed, just as they won't be impressed by a mere certifcate or something from an online program. They want to see that you are dedicated, committed and a hard worker. A simple certificate or something from an online program shows that you are not.

My advice to you is to try and get your foot in the door at a law office NOW, start as a legal secretary, receptionist or clerk. Build up law office experience while you go to school. That way, when you graduate you have a degree and law office experience, even though it isn't paralegal experience, it is better than nothing. And while you are finishing school, talk to your employer about the possibility of promotion once you complete your degree.

If you plan ahead your transition into the legal field and into a paralegal position won't be too difficult.

Best of luck to you!!

Do sellers and/or their attorneys need to be present for a home closing?
AGC-ODOT 14

We are closing on a home this week and just found out that the seller and their attorneys will not be present at the closing, it's just going to be us and our attorney. Is that common, is something wrong with this, should we be worried about something? Our lawyer didn't really think this is a problem, but my husband and I aren't too thrilled about this, because this is our first home purchase and we imagined the closing to be with the seller and their attorney. I would apprecite any insight to help me ease my mind before we jump into the 'biggest deal' of our lives so far. Thanks in advance.

no big deal, why would it matter if they where their or not? as long as all the paper work is completed and signed why do you care?

if they have moved out, signed all the paper work then all they care about is getting a check, all you care about is clear title,

Lawyers, also called attorneys, act as both advocates and advisors in our society. As advocates, they represent one of the parties in criminal and civil trials by presenting evidence and arguing in court to support their client. As advisors, lawyers counsel their clients concerning their legal rights and obligations and suggest particular courses of action in business and personal matters. Whether acting as an advocate or an advisor, all attorneys research the intent of laws and judicial decisions and apply the law to the specific circumstances faced by their client. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos053.htm

Leading off Dodgers divorce trial, Frank McCourt's attorney builds up Jamie to ... USA Today

LOS ANGELES -- It's lunchtime at the McCourt/Dodgers divorce trial, and time to chew over the opening arguments of superstar attorneys Steve Susman and Dennis Wasser.

Susman, the Texas attorney who in May donated $5 million to the Texas law school and is now trying to save Frank McCourt's ownership stake in the Dodgers, will continue his opening argument when things resume in Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon's courtroom in the Stanley Most Courthouse on the downtown L.A. corner of First and Hill.

At stake: the future of the Dodgers and the division of perhaps more than $1 billion in assets.

Susman has painted Frank's wife, Jamie McCourt, as not having a legal leg to stand on as she seeks to acquire part-ownership of the Dodgers despite signing a marital property agreement in 2004 awarding her the McCourt's real estate holdings and awarding Frank sole ownership of the Dodgers and the 276 acres of real estate known as Chavez Ravine - just up the Pasadena Freeway from the courthouse.
