I'm not interested in books that were written last week. I want ideas for accounting theory books that were written 50 or 100 years ago and are still relevant today.

Well, the basic concepts that withstand the test of time are in all the books, even the ones written last week

There's nothing wrong with the newer ones, things change all the time, you might be getting some wrong information in an older book

As far as more general/theory, you sound lazy. Okay, that's a bit offensive, but quit looking for an easy 'one right way' manual. The best thing you can do as an accountant is know your business and industry.

I don't know if you want to learn about the actual accounting process or about the accounting business in general so I will give you a couple of recommendations.
there are a number of areas relating to accounting
Management, Accounting principles, Basic Accounting and Cost Accounting as well as Auditing and others.
FUNDAMENTAL ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES By: K. Larson 18th edition is a very good book to start with it explains all aspects of accounting. you can get it on ebay. also for BASIC ACCOUNTING there are lots of choices at

I am running a business over 3 years not maintaining proper books and accounting software. Please advice how to maintain proper book of accounts and accounting software?

As a business owner, a basic knowledge of accounting is essential. You need to learn how to tell whether or not your business is doing well.

First, I suggest buying a basic accounting book. There are many texts available, I'd get any old college or high school book. I am sure they are cheap.

As for accounting software, sure quickbooks would be fine. Get yourself an old version: no need for the 2008 version just yet.

But again, you need to learn about how accounting works.

I wanted to know what differences are there between edition 11 and 12 of Managerial Accounting by Garrison. Is it really that different??

Heck no. The main thing they are trying to do is correct some editing mistakes as always.

Oh yeah, they WILL rearrange the problem numbers in the assignment sections and change the numbers used on those problems also. The principles of managerial accounting remain the same - but the numbers have changed so that a student of 11E cannot simply pass on exact answers to the same numbered problem to a student using 12E. Standard procedure in textbook publishing.

I am planning to start a Nursery business growing plants and I am looking to find a good book to read about how to set up accounting for this type of business. Can anyone recommend a good book for the non-accounting professional? Maybe a little better than a "Dummies" book.

You can start with searching only. There are a couple of good online accounting lectures / lessons which are free. Check out http://simplestudies.com or http://studiesfaction.com.

I believe you do need to understand debits and credits to successfully use an accounting package. Even though such packages like QuickBooks are easy to understand, you still want to know what it does for you :)

In terms of selecting the best legal form (LLC, etc.), check out nolo.com website as they have some good materials there. If you have a specific question about legal forms, feel free to post here.
